Workshop 2: How to decide the portfolio of innovation opportunities for the energy transition in smart cities

Due to usually limited monetary and non-monetary resources, a selection of the innovation options is required. Established decision-making techniques, such as business case development, might be difficult to deploy in particular for the early-stage, low maturity innovations. Missing information and many assumptions could lead to speculative implications. In addition to the economic viability, factors, such as value for the citizens can be important to consider in strategic planning of a municipality. In this workshop, we will apply a methodology that facilitates the definition of the individual decision criteria and the prioritisation a portfolio of innovation ideas.

Please note: The number of participants for this event is limited to 25 to allow for interactive working.

Event series: technology scale-up in municipalities

This event is part of a series in which the ACCESS partners will share their insights from the pilots’ preparation and the measures undertaken to overcome the barriers encountered. The ACCESS* project (Advancing Communities towards low-carbon energy smart systems) helps cities address the shared challenges to upscaling low-carbon solutions and meeting their sustainability targets. The local authorities of Amersfoort (NL), West-Suffolk Councils (UK), Malmö (SE) and Mechelen (BE) are jointly exploring and demonstrating the potential of local energy community hubs and peer-to-peer energy trading modelsin four pilots.

In addition, some key strategic energy planning tools will be introduced and applied in collaborative hands-on activities. You might participate in one, two or all three of them, according to your interests and stage of planning in your city:

September 22: How to identify innovation opportunities for energy transition in smart cities (info & registration

September 29: How to decide the portfolio of innovation opportunities for energy transition in smart cities (info & registration)

October 6: How to find the right technology partner for smart grid technologies (info & registration

*This project is funded by the Interreg North Sea Region programme.

Workshop 3: How to find the right technology partner for smart grid technologies

Technology is a key resource to the future of smart cities and energy systems. Different routes exist to acquire technology from external sources. These are for example partnerships, licensing, joint development and many more. Understanding different options is an important step towards finding the right partner with the right technological solution. In this workshop, we will use a process that helps to evaluate and compare different technology providers and their solutions and to make a decision.

Workshop 1: How to identify innovation opportunities for the energy transition in smart cities

Application of a new technology or an innovative concept can lead to high savings and improvements in the quality of life in one municipality, but elsewhere not. A variety of factors have an impact on this potential. These factors are, for example, the age distribution of the population, the available infrastructure or existing resources, such as access to local research facilities or the geographical location. Inclusion of these factors in the identification of the innovation initiatives helps to better anticipate the future and to shape the strategic path. In this workshop, we will use a methodology that raises situational awareness and incorporates it into the ideation process.
